About the prize and the Daily Mail Chalke Valley History Festival

The Daily Mail Chalke Valley History Festival is the largest festival dedicated to history in the UK. This year, it’s running from 25th June to 1st July.

The festival’s organisers have kindly put together the following prize for us, to be enjoyed by our winner and a guest on Sunday 1st July 2018.

  • FREE ENTRANCE to the Festival giving access to Living History encampments, Live History Live events, pop-up talks, static displays (Spitfire and tanks), food stalls, emporium and fly-pasts of historic aircraft.

  • A pair of tickets to:
AIRFORCE BLUE: THE RAF IN WORLD WAR TWO – SPEARHEAD OF VICTORY
    Patrick Bishop 10.00-11.00am
Patrick Bishop, an outstanding historian of the wartime RAF, will examine the high point of the RAF’s existence – the Second World War – when the air force saved the nation from defeat and then led the advance to victory. From the choppy seas of the Atlantic to the sands of the Western Desert to the jungles of Burma, he will portray the spirit of the RAF during its finest hours.

  • A pair of tickets to:
SPITFIRE: A VERY BRITISH LOVE STORY
    John Nichol 3.00-4.00pm
Former RAF Tornado navigator John Nichol was shot down and held as a prisoner-of-war during the 1991 Gulf War. He understands the reality of battle and the enduring allure of combat aircraft, especially the iconic Spitfire. In this talk, he will discuss his own experiences alongside the remarkable story of the Spitfire and those who flew it.

  • A pair of tickets to:
    WINKLE AND THE JETS
    Paul Beaver  6.00-7.00pm
Always fearless, sometimes impetuous, Captain Eric Brown, better known as Winkle, was an early jet and rocket fighter pioneer. Unusual in being a naval pilot, his experience in immediate post-war Germany and at the Royal Aircraft Establishment has passed into legend. His biographer Paul Beaver will separate reality from the myth and legend, shining a new light on Winkle’s exploits.
